Seventeen of us packed up and moved from Sihanoukville down to Kep back in March. When we first arrived, none of us really felt easy in our minds, constantly wondering if safety here was actually any better than what we left behind in Sihanoukville.
We ended up renting two villas down by the coast. The place is pretty tucked away, with hardly a soul walking down the street. The neighborhood is mostly well-off locals, and people say a few high-ranking officials own property inside the compound too. Our landlord has never shown his face even once; the whole place is handled through a real estate agent, which gives it a slightly mysterious vibe.
Over the past six months, the police in Kep have raided quite a few foreign cyber-scam operations, but most of those were set up in the crowded parts of town. Out here in the quiet back alleys, we haven't been bothered at all. When our manager asked if we should recommend the neighborhood to other departments looking for rentals, every single one of us spoke up against it. Nobody wanted to bring extra attention or invite unnecessary trouble to our doorstep.
