Early yesterday morning, unsettling news broke out of Kampot. Two Chinese nationals got into a heated dispute, and things took a terrible turn when one drew a weapon and slashed the other, inflicting severe injuries. Right now, the victim is still in emergency care, fighting for his life. Local media reported that the police have stepped in to investigate, though official details regarding the exact location and the identities of those involved are still pending.
Kampot is usually one of the quieter corners down here. A lot of our folks run small street stalls, manage modest trading shops, or do heavy lifting on construction sites and industrial parks around the area. Day in and day out, people sweat through the thick humidity, hauling goods and making rounds between Poipet, Phnom Penh, and Kampot—all for an honest wage. After taking care of room rent, water, electricity, and basic daily meals, everyone is just trying to save a little peace of mind for the family back home. After a long, exhausting day of work, night is supposed to be the time to kick off your shoes and rest. Hearing about a violent clash like this in our own community leaves a heavy, bitter feeling in everyone's chest.
Word travels fast through the street corners and coffee stalls, and folks are reminding one another to stay calm. We all crossed the sea down south to make a living, and living abroad isn't easy. When tempers flare, take a deep breath and step back—think of the elderly parents and young kids waiting back home. Try not to linger in dark, quiet alleys late at night. At the end of the day, coming home safe every evening and keeping your daily life on a steady track matters more than anything else.
