A major political bomb just dropped in Georgia. The Tbilisi City Court has handed down a heavy 13-year prison sentence to the country's former head of the State Security Service, Grigor Liluashvili. The charge? Massive corruption, after he lined his pockets with over $2 million in bribes. The top chief meant to catch criminals turned out to have the longest fingers of them all.
According to evidence accepted by the court, Liluashvili raked in $1.365 million between 2021 and 2022 alone just in "protection fees." A fraudulent call center syndicate was running rampant in Tbilisi, and he acted as their ultimate safety net. During this period, he even took bribes from a Taiwanese boss named Xu. While ordinary workers were sweating through night shifts on the streets to make ends meet, he was kicking back in his office splitting millions.
And he didn't stop at scam centers. Liluashvili also squeezed out massive kickbacks from national wind power, natural gas, and government procurement projects. People chatting over tea in town are saying the man never met a bribe he didn't like—he'd take cash from absolutely anyone. But now the hammer has fallen, and he’ll be spending the next 13 years behind bars.
