Tourism Minister Huot Hak and Preah Sihanouk Governor Mang Sineth sat down together a few days ago to officially roll out the Sihanoukville Tourism Development Plan for 2026 to 2030. According to the two officials, over the next few years the coastal city is not just aiming to attract holidaymakers and business travelers, but pushing hard to become Cambodia's second-biggest urban center.
To be fair, Sihanoukville has built up quite a solid base of infrastructure lately. You have the expressway running in from Phnom Penh, a deep-sea port out on the coast, and an international airport up in the sky. The hardware is all there. Officials at the meeting made it clear that the next step is bringing in high-tech solutions like digital tools and artificial intelligence, while keeping a tight grip on security to make sure visitors feel safe.
Over at the local coffee stall, the owner isn't losing sleep over big grand master plans. What she cares about every day is seeing more people down by the pier and out on the streets. Whether they are here for business or just to catch some sun, as long as there are more people under the streetlights, life gets a little easier for everyone. Whether this new plan can actually change Sihanoukville will really depend on whether ordinary folks find business getting better over the next few years.
