Early this morning, the Poipet Municipal Unified Administrative Command launched a sweeping inspection across three different sangkats, sealing off 11 residential compounds popular with foreign nationals. Before the exhaust fumes from morning motorbike traffic had even cleared, the blue lights of enforcement vehicles were flashing down the alleys. It was a major operation. Authorities screened a total of 104 foreigners—including 31 women—from 10 different countries, spanning Thailand, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and one Chinese national.
As officials checked passports and visas one by one, the results came in. While 89 people had all their paperwork in order, the remaining 15 were in trouble, completely unable to produce legal identification. Local authorities are now holding the undocumented individuals for further questioning according to standard procedures. But the biggest surprise came when officers stumbled upon a lead at one of the locations, following it up to bust an active online scam den hidden right inside. These days, dodgy operations tucked away inside ordinary rental units just keep popping up.
