Yesterday afternoon, the Kep provincial military police sent a 36-year-old Chinese man named Wu Yanwei to the local court. The whole thing goes back to September 9, when military police intercepted a black Jeep coming from Phnom Penh near the Elephant Roundabout, detaining all three Chinese and two Cambodians inside on the spot.
Officers searched the vehicle and found a stash of weapons: a Glock pistol, an M16 rifle, and a modified AK-47, along with six mobile phones. Following an investigation and with the prosecutor's approval, the other four people in the car have been released. However, Wu Yanwei was held and handed over to the court to face charges for illegal possession and firing of firearms.
Hearing stories like this on the road has become pretty common lately. Residents passing through checkpoints at night and seeing heavily armed military police can't help feeling a bit jittery. Folks chatting over tea in the morning always say that staying straight is what matters most when you are far from home, and keeping well away from anyone packing heavy heat is definitely the smartest move.
