On September 9, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jean Ferris Pirro announced that the country's transnational scam strike force has expanded its reach worldwide, highlighting a major operation in the East African island nation of Madagascar.
Working alongside local law enforcement, the U.S. task force raided and shut down 13 scam compounds allegedly run by Chinese organized crime syndicates. The operation was massive, with authorities seizing over 3,000 electronic devices. Official photos show phones being hauled out in packed crates, piled high.
According to local media, nearly 400 people were rounded up during the raids. Law enforcement interviewed suspects on the spot to dig deeper into the operation, and about 30 Chinese nationals identified as scam ringleaders have already been handcuffed and deported back to China.
