A kidnapping case in Penang has landed four Chinese nationals—three men and a woman—in the Balik Pulau Sessions Court.
The suspects, identified as Huang Jian, Wang Haoyu, Liu Tingjun, and Zhu Yaling, face charges of abducting a Singaporean man, wrongfully confining him, and demanding a hefty ransom. Police moved in quickly after receiving a report, raiding the hideout, rescuing the victim, and nabbing all four suspects on the spot.
Escorted into court heavily guarded on Tuesday morning, the four listened as the court interpreter read out the charges in Mandarin. All of them pleaded not guilty. Given the severity of the offense and the fact that they are foreign nationals, the judge denied bail, ordering them to remain remanded pending the completion of court documents.
As the suspects were being led away after the hearing, a minor spectacle broke out. Facing a battery of reporters and camera lenses at the courthouse entrance, Zhu suddenly snapped and shouted at the press: "What are you staring at? Never seen a pretty girl before?" The outburst has since become local kopitiam chatter, with residents laughing at her fiery attitude despite facing serious criminal charges.
Meanwhile, police are digging deeper to find out if the kidnapping is tied to broader cross-border illegal online gambling or loan-sharking syndicates.
