In late September, the National Police launched a new mobile app called "Kapea Scams" for a three-month trial run. Between dodging exhaust fumes on Phnom Penh's chaotic streets and dodging endless dodgy messages popping up on our phones, locals now have a new tool to fight back.
According to the police, anyone can download the app to directly report suspicious phone numbers, scam accounts, and chat screenshots. People here have welcomed the initiative—after all, almost everyone has received scam calls pretending to be government officials or warning that bank accounts have been hacked, and everyone is fed up.
Local media reports say police are urging the public to download and use the app to help tackle the relentless wave of telecom scams. Life here is already tough enough; if this helps people hold onto a few more dollars, neighbors might actually have one less thing to sigh about over their morning iced coffee.
