The first day of September was anything touched off a stir in Phnom Penh’s Boeung Keng Kang district. Sok Sambath, the district governor, personally led a team of district police chiefs and law enforcement officers straight to a suspected hideout in the area. It was a broad-daylight raid, with police stringing up police tape around the perimeter and sealing off all the nearby intersections.
The people inside didn't manage to get away this time. During an on-site inventory, officers detained 18 Bangladeshi nationals—17 men and one woman. Judging by the setup, it was another scam operation holed up in a rental house or apartment building—the kind with windows shut tight all day, where you wouldn't even see a shadow passing by on a motorbike.
Local media reported that the group has been taken in for questioning, though authorities are still verifying whether they were directly involved in online scams. Passersby and local residents just shook their heads. These days, foreigners hiding out in Phnom Penh pulling stunts like this are finding it harder and harder to sit still.
