Over the past few days in Koh Kong province's Sre Ambel district, conservation rangers pulling memory cards from their remote trail cameras got a pleasant surprise. The snaps captured by the forest traps recorded three critically endangered species for the very first time.
Local media reported that the rare wildlife caught on camera are barking deer, large Indian civets, and hairy-nosed otters. These creatures usually move like ghosts through the deep woods, making them nearly impossible for ordinary people to spot.
Walk down any local market street or wander along a rural track, and people are mostly talking about livelihoods and the weather. But whenever you catch wind of the rangers talking about these forest updates, it’s a nice reminder that deep inside the dense canopy of this land, we still have plenty of wild neighbors worth looking out for.
