A cross-border telecom fraud case recently disclosed by the People's Procuratorate of Xingning, Guangdong Province, laid bare how one overseas stint ended in prison. In March 2025, tempted by claims of high-paying jobs abroad, a local man named Liao falsely cited travel to Canada to obtain a passport, then flew via Thailand to join a telecom fraud compound in Cambodia. Once inside and seeing lucrative returns, he lured acquaintances, including Zhang and Lai, by dangling high salaries, directing them on how to fraudulently obtain exit documents while arranging their routes, transit, and travel expenses.

Between May and July 2025, Zhang, Lai, and others entered the Cambodian compound to participate in fraud operations. In January 2026, Liao and others were caught after returning to China. Police wrapped up the investigation and sent the case to prosecutors in April, and charges were filed in June.

The Xingning court convicted Liao of organizing illegal border crossings, illegal border crossing, and fraud, sentencing him to four years and six months in prison alongside a 49,000 yuan fine. Zhang was sentenced to two years and eleven months with a 34,000 yuan fine for illegal border crossing and fraud. What began as an overseas shortcut to wealth ultimately ended in heavy criminal penalties.
