There is something pretty cool happening around the protected area along the Sre Ambel River in Koh Kong province lately. Conservationists have spotted three extremely rare and endangered mammal species—marking the very first time these little guys have ever been officially recorded in the area.
Walking along the riverbanks, with the smell of motorbike exhaust mixing with damp earth, it is hard to imagine that deep in the brush these hidden gems are actually hanging out. If it were not for long-term conservation work and regular ranger patrols, we would probably never know just how alive this forest really is.
According to local reports, the arrival of these rare creatures shows that the surrounding ecosystem is being genuinely well looked after. As people chat about it around town, the general feeling is simple: as long as the forests stand, these old neighbors of ours can finally live in peace.
