Just recently, a senior official from the US Embassy, Aleks Zittle, made a special trip to Siem Reap. He wasn't there for a holiday; he went to check in on APOPO, the organization busy with demining efforts in the area.
These demining teams, these folks, are out there every day under the scorching sun, meticulously searching the ground for those deadly devices. I hear they're even using some pretty innovative equipment to dig out those buried landmines, so everyone can feel safe walking around. It's no secret there are many mines around here – a painful legacy from the hard times of the past, which has harmed so many people.
After seeing all this, the US official remarked that their efforts are all about making Cambodia a safer place. And it's true, isn't it? Landmines have devastated so many families. You see people on the streets missing limbs; many of them stepped on a mine years ago. Getting rid of these things, clearing them all out, is a huge blessing for the local people. Only then can people work in their fields without worry, and children play safely outside.
