Over a cold iced coffee at a roadside tea stall with some friends these past couple of days, I heard about something pretty heavy. Local media are reporting that the Cambodian government has officially filed a complaint with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, accusing the Thai military of using chemical substances during a military clash in 2025.
It is a serious situation, affecting close to 400 ordinary villagers. People in those border towns just want to live their lives, riding motorbikes to deliver goods or running small food stalls. No one ever expected to deal with toxic hazards that completely upend their daily routines.
Life for everyday folks round here is already tough enough. People sweat it out under the sun all day just to head back to a rented room at night, and border trouble is the last thing anyone wants. Now that this has been taken to an international body, people on the street are watching closely, hoping for a clear outcome soon so that innocent victims do not suffer in vain.
