Cambodia’s auto manufacturing sector is picking up momentum, with 15 car assembly plants now in the country. Ten of these facilities are already up and running, while the remaining five are under construction or in the planning stages. Together, they have the capacity to assemble around 35,000 vehicles a year, mostly supplying the local market.
Major brands like BYD and CAMKO are already active on the factory floor. Backed by Chinese and Hong Kong investors, BYD’s plant can assemble over 10,000 units annually, while South Korean-backed CAMKO has a capacity of 1,800 vehicles a year.
Other players are working to get their operations off the ground. Plants for K N N and ZDG are currently under construction and expected to start production soon, though two other registered ventures—including Worldwide Motors—have yet to break ground.
According to local media, most of these assembly plants are concentrated in special economic zones around key hubs like Phnom Penh and Kampong Cham. As local production picks up, more and more vehicles hitting Cambodian roads are coming straight off these domestic assembly lines.
