Over in Samlot district, Battambang province, farmers are starting to harvest their golden milk fruit. Growers say the branches have been heavy with fruit for the past couple of weeks, and they are expecting a total yield of around 30 tonnes this season—a pretty pleasing sight for everyone involved.
As for the name, locals used to call them yellow milk fruit, but they've now rebranded them as "Samlot golden milk fruit." Farmers explain that it is just like how they stopped calling their durian Monthong and started calling it "Samlot golden durian." Changing the names is all about branding, making sure people instantly know the fruit comes from Battambang. Since Battambang is already well-known as a major agricultural hub with plenty of fruits, using local names just gives them a stronger identity in the market.
When it comes to prices—which is what everyone wants to know—these golden milk fruits are selling for roughly three to four dollars a kilo, both wholesale and retail. This particular orchard was first planted back in 2022, and out across nearly 30 hectares of land, over 1,400 trees are now ready for a proper harvest.
