Banteay Meanchey provincial military police have sent two suspects to the provincial court over illegal smuggling and drug use, following their arrest near the Thai border in Malai district.
The bust happened at around 4:30 p.m. on September 8. Border infantry troops caught the pair along a stream bank near the border and handed them over to the Malai district military police. Officers seized a large haul during the operation, including six cardboard boxes containing 1,150 bottles of "Datissin" cough syrup smuggled in from Thailand.
During questioning, the suspects confessed that they were working for a mastermind named Sarun, getting paid 20,000 riels per run. They admitted it was their second time doing the job. Both suspects also tested positive for drugs.
The case has now been forwarded to the court, while local police are hunting down the fugitive ringleader.
