If you have been keeping an eye on local safety here in Laos, police have been putting real pressure on cybercrime and online scam operations since early 2026. So far, officers have rounded up over 6,200 suspects, a large number of whom are Chinese nationals.
August was particularly heavy, with nearly 900 people picked up across the country. Over the weekend of August 29, police raided two locations in Vientiane’s Saysettha District, arresting 139 people and seizing a lot of electronic gear used for scamming, along with other contraband. Earlier that month, on August 8, authorities broke up an online fraud and gambling ring operating out of the That Luang Lake Specific Economic Zone, taking 261 people into custody.
Officials noted that an even bigger raid took place on July 18, when officers hauled in 589 suspects in one go. Right now, interrogations are still underway as police try to trace the operations back to the ringleaders hiding behind the scenes.
