Svay Rieng police raided a rented villa in Bavet sangkat today, busting an online scam operation tucked away inside. Officers arrested 14 Vietnamese nationals, including six women, and seized a stash of equipment including all-in-one desktop computers, PC towers, monitors, and a stack of mobile phones.
The suspects and seized evidence have been handed over to the Svay Rieng Provincial Police Anti-Cybercrime Bureau for further investigation and legal action. The villa used as the scam center has been temporarily sealed off by authorities.
The bust comes at a time when local enforcement is on high alert, with regional anti-scam conferences underway and rewards being offered for leads. Yet, scammers still dared to operate right under the nose of the police. On the busy streets of Bavet, amid the daily haze of motorbike exhaust and street-food smoke, plenty of workers are just looking for a stable living. But behind the closed gates of seemingly quiet rental villas around town, the waters often run surprisingly deep.
