After Operation 1027 upended syndicate strongholds in Kokang and Wa State, scam networks have been quietly relocating deeper into Shan State. Word on the ground is that at least 17 townships across southern and eastern Shan State—including places like Tangyan and Laihka—are now feeling the strain as these groups set up shop.
Local media reports indicate that at least 25 suspected scam hubs remain operational in these areas, with activity particularly heavy around the border hub of Muse. While exact numbers are hard to pin down, the trend is clear enough to have street vendors and locals talking. As border crackdowns intensify, many operators are fleeing further inland, fanning out toward major urban hubs like Yangon and Mandalay.
Myanmar authorities have carried out a series of recent busts targeting online fraud and illegal gambling rings, reflecting just how dispersed these networks have become. Over green tea at local stalls, the advice circulating is simple: stay sharp online, because as these syndicates scatter, their traps are becoming harder to spot.
