I stepped out to grab a coffee this morning and had just cleared the intersection lights when I heard a dull, heavy crash. Rushing over, I saw two tuk-tuks and a pickup crumpled together in a mess, their front ends smashed in and debris scattered all across the pavement. Two motorbikes were down on the tarmac nearby, their riders crouching by the curb dusting themselves off.

Before long, local traffic police pulled up on their bikes. Under the blazing sun, they ran caution tape and began waving passing vehicles around the wreckage. A crowd of onlookers kept swelling, people watching with iced coffees in hand, shaking their heads and muttering about how fast everyone has been driving down these streets lately.

Honestly, intersections around here have never had much order, and people cutting each other off is just part of daily life. Even as a passenger, you have to hold on tight as drivers weave their way through the traffic. With a mess like this, the road is going to be locked up for a while, leaving everyone to crawl along under the midday heat.
