A few days ago at the Boten border checkpoint, Lao police handed over a group of 142 Chinese nationals involved in various offenses, including five women. Right after the handover procedures were completed, they were escorted back to China for further investigation.
Local authorities made it clear that these individuals mainly violated Laos' laws on immigration and the management of foreigners. Some crossed the border through unofficial paths, while others were working on the wrong type of visa. Some were running small businesses without permits or had simply overstayed their welcome and gone underground. To make matters worse, some of them are also linked to cybercrime, so the investigation back home is going to be a deep one.
This group was put together through a joint effort starting from the Ministry of Public Security down to Vientiane police, before finally being transferred up to Boten. When you are out on the street dodging motorbikes and grabbing an iced coffee, you always hear rumors about this kind of thing, but at least this batch has finally been cleared out.
