Phnom Penh’s notorious Gold Tower 42 is making noise again. It has loomed over the city for years like an unfinished scar on the skyline, but according to local media, new shareholders have stepped in to dust off the concrete shell and take another crack at reviving the long-stalled project.
To be honest, nobody walks down Monivong Boulevard without glancing up at the beast. The buyers who put money down back in the day and the shopkeepers working in its shadow ran out of patience years ago. Now with talk of construction restarting, folks sitting around street stalls nursing cups of iced coffee are talking about it with pure skepticism. Nobody is willing to bet good money that it will actually cross the finish line this time.
Spend enough time around here and you get used to mega-projects rising, halting, and fading out. Day and night, the motorbikes roar past, tuk-tuks hit the gas and kick up a wave of hot air, and life just rolls on. Whether the tower ever actually lights up will come down to hard cash on the table. For the rest of us just going about our day, it’s just another story to chew over.
