Police in Chittagong, Bangladesh, have been really busy these past few days. Between September 10th and 11th, they raided an 8-story building in the Khulshi area. The result? Sixty-three foreign suspects were nabbed, and five of them were Chinese nationals.
It was a chaotic scene, with no one able to produce a passport. Police seized 134 mobile phones and 57 laptops – a mountain of equipment, really quite astonishing.
Local media reports indicate that out of the 63, 35 were from Laos, 21 from Pakistan, and one each from Nepal and Vietnam. What's even stranger is that there was even a child among them. Police found they were living in sections, segregated by nationality. They suspect a guy named Mohsin was in charge, renting the entire building and holding onto their passports – sounds like he was the big boss.
Police believe these individuals might be involved in online scams, things like fake online shopping schemes and romance scams. While the exact scam methods aren't fully clear yet, authorities have started investigating how these people entered the country and what happened to their passports.
With Laos and Cambodia cracking down harder on scams recently, it's possible many of these folks just moved their operations to Bangladesh. Locals in the area are all talking about it, saying these groups seem to just drift around, never settling down.
