Over in Phnom Penh, it was quite the scene this afternoon. Prime Minister Hun Sen, representing His Majesty the King, rolled out the red carpet to host Myanmar's leader, Min Aung Hlaing, for a state banquet. Min Aung Hlaing is in Cambodia for an official state visit, and it was certainly a grand affair.
PM Hun Sen personally congratulated Min Aung Hlaing on his leadership role, reiterating that Cambodia and Myanmar are long-standing friends, a bond that's taken very seriously here. The two leaders also took a moment to reflect on their shared history, noting that they've had diplomatic ties for seventy years – quite a milestone. Their discussions then moved to boosting cooperation in trade, investment, and culture, and how they can further support each other within ASEAN.
According to PM Hun Sen, this visit by Min Aung Hlaing would definitely solidify bilateral relations, which he believes will benefit the people of both nations.
Of course, on the ground, the folks zipping around on motos or hawking street food probably weren't too focused on the VIP dinner. Everyone's still busy with their daily grind, making ends meet. Still, these high-level meetings are always a big deal for the country; who knows, it might just open up more business and opportunities down the line.
