Heard the news? Myanmar's Senior General Min Aung Hlaing is coming to Phnom Penh next month. He's scheduled for a two-day visit, from September 11th to 12th.
Our government departments here are already buzzing, holding meetings to sort out the reception, security, and traffic flow. They want to make sure everything goes smoothly for his visit. You can bet we'll see a lot more police cars on the roads those days, and motorbikes will probably have to make way more often than usual.
Officials are saying the main reason for his trip is to strengthen ties between Cambodia and Myanmar and boost cooperation. During his stay, General Min Aung Hlaing is expected to meet with Senate President Hun Sen, and also with Prime Minister Hun Manet – you know, "Little Hun Sen" as some call him. These are definitely high-level talks, so they'll likely be discussing some pretty big issues.
Whenever we have a big dignitary like this visiting, Phnom Penh always feels a bit different. Street vendors might have to pack up early, and you notice more security around residential areas. For us regular folks, it might not change much, but for the security teams, it means a lot of extra shifts and late nights, for sure. Hopefully, everything goes off without a hitch and it's a smooth, peaceful visit.
