Around 10:00 a.m. on October 13, gunshots rang out from unit A506 at Meteor Garden Apartments on Chania Avenue, located in the Kilimani district of Nairobi, Kenya. Apartment staff discovered the door was locked from the inside and used a spare key to gain entry, where they found two people dead inside. Local police have opened an investigation.
According to Kenyan media reports, the deceased were identified as cohabitants: a Chinese man surnamed Xu and a Vietnamese woman surnamed Nguyen. Their bodies were discovered seated side by side on a mattress in the living room, both with gunshot wounds to the head. At the scene, officers recovered a BUL 9mm pistol, a magazine loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition, two spent 9mm cartridges, and a handwritten note suspected to be a suicide note, which is now undergoing forensic examination.
Issa Mohamud, the police official in charge in Nairobi, noted that, supported by the fact that the door was locked from the inside, investigators are currently looking into two possibilities: the pair may have entered a suicide pact, or one shot the other before taking their own life. Authorities are currently verifying whether the firearm was legally licensed and emphasized that these are preliminary deductions with no final conclusions yet drawn. The bodies have been transferred to Chiromo Mortuary for post-mortem examinations as the investigation into the exact circumstances and motive continues.
In the wake of the incident, various rumors speculating on the motive began circulating online, though police have yet to confirm any details, and all such claims remain unsubstantiated. Living and working far from home in Africa often brings complex emotional and psychological pressures within cross-cultural relationships. When facing profound emotional distress, reaching out for external help and communication is vital, rather than choosing an irreversible path.
