According to Cambodian media reports, an investigating judge at the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court has officially issued detention warrants to remand 12 Indonesian nationals, including three women, on suspicion of running online scams. The syndicate specialized in luring victims through fraudulent shopping apps, and all suspects alongside seized evidence have now been transferred to the provincial prison pending further legal proceedings.
The case goes back to a raid in late September. On the evening of September 22, military police units raided a shophouse in Village 2, Sangkat 2, detaining all 12 on the spot. The haul inside painted a clear picture of their setup: 13 desktop computers, 47 mobile phones, 52 SIM cards, plus passports, work permits, and bank cards. A dozen people packed into a neighborhood shophouse operating fake e-commerce schemes has increasingly become the typical footprint for small foreign scam cells.
As sustained crackdowns and regional pressure targeted major Chinese-run compounds, Sihanoukville's illicit landscape has quietly diversified, with non-Chinese crews focusing on regional Southeast Asian markets setting up their own desks. However, this case demonstrates that local enforcement is actively sweeping hidden shophouse operations regardless of target language or nationality, leaving shrinking room for illegal operations to hide.
