According to the latest figures from the Ministry of Tourism, the country received only around 1.9 million international arrivals in the first seven months of 2026, marking a steep 46.2 percent drop year-on-year. The downturn was already clear last year, when total 2025 arrivals barely topped 5 million, down 16.9 percent. Without steady foreign foot traffic, local businesses relying on travel—from eateries and private drivers to guesthouses—are finding it difficult to stay afloat.
To stem the crisis, the government rolled out recovery plans for Siem Reap, tax incentives, and a green season promotional drive, but market response remains sluggish. Chhay Sivlin, president of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents, pointed out that resting on the laurels of Angkor Wat is no longer viable, urging stronger international outreach and aggressive pivoting toward large markets like India to fill the void.
For foreign operators and Chinese business owners reliant on physical footfall and general retail, the sharp drop in visitors compounds already weak domestic spending. With the peak season approaching, many local ventures could face severe survival tests if promotional efforts fail to yield quick results.
