In Muse, a town in northern Shan State, Myanmar, the Old Gold Mountain Casino Hotel has become a hub for scams. Around 200 Chinese nationals and 400 ethnic Chinese from Myanmar are reportedly involved. The Chinese are mainly running the scams, while the local Chinese are used to lure people in.
These scammers target elderly folks back in China using platforms like WeChat, Douyin, and Kuaishou. It's said that these Chinese operators are not only brazen but also fail to pay wages and even prevent people from leaving. Many local Chinese were tricked into joining, only to find themselves unpaid after more than a month of work.
Behind these scams is the Shan State Army-North (SSPP-SSA-N), a local armed group. They use this area as one of their bases and seem to turn a blind eye to the scams, as it brings economic benefits to the region. Local media are urging anti-fraud centers in Muse and Ruili to take swift action to put an end to these activities.
