On September 20th, social media in Laos was buzzing with news about a close call at the Boten border crossing. Quick-thinking customs officers and police managed to stop a group of people and rescue a young girl.
This incident took place at the Boten border in Luang Namtha Province. Local reports say border police noticed something suspicious during a check and ended up detaining four suspects. They were allegedly trying to take the little girl to China. Among the suspects, two are Chinese nationals and the other two are Lao women acting as intermediaries. Photos show the suspects on the ground, surrounded by stern-faced Lao police officers.
The girl, just four years old, was wearing a red top and green pants. She sat in a chair, looking bewildered, likely unaware of the danger she had just escaped. Local news quickly reported on the severity of the situation. The case is still under investigation.
