Myanmar has extended its visa-on-arrival scheme for Chinese and Indian tourists for another year.
The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism announced on September 15 that this is the third time the policy has been rolled over, meaning it will stay in place until the end of August 2027.
With this extension, Chinese travelers can easily catch a flight to Myanmar on short notice. The visa-on-arrival makes things much simpler by cutting out the hassle of getting a visa in advance, and local media report that the move is expected to breathe new life into the country's tourism sector.
Tourism is a major deal locally, and backpackers loaded down with gear—especially visitors from China—are a common sight on the streets, driving business across dining, shopping, and entertainment. Locals say everyone is happy to see the policy extended and is looking forward to a pickup in business.
