Over the last few days, people across Yangon have been buzzing about the police finally sniffing out the operations. From 31st Street in Latha Township to Sinmin Ward in Ahlone, the houses looked like ordinary homes from the outside with their doors and windows shut tight, but business inside was booming. According to local media, police raided at least five townships in a single sweep, busting online gambling proxy dens and residential hideouts.
They hauled in a big catch—36 people in total, men and women alike, with 13 men and 23 women caught squatting on the floor with their hands over their heads. The rooms were piled high with computer towers and all kinds of gear, with cables tangled up like spider webs. These syndicate operators usually spent their days hidden deep in the alleys hammering away at keyboards, never expecting the cops to bust through their doors with zero chance of escape.
The biggest prize of all was the alleged masterminds' core player, Kay Hsin Wai, known to everyone simply as "Ma Kay." On the evening of September 1, as she was hanging around outside the South Okkalapa Township Ward 13 administrator's office, local law enforcement slapped the cuffs on her. In a neighborhood thick with motorbike exhaust where locals usually sit by the roadside drinking tea and gossiping, residents watched the police cruisers tear past as yet another get-rich-quick dream went up in smoke right by the curb.
