Several military police pickup trucks rolled into a beachfront villa compound in Sihanoukville in broad daylight, catching everyone off guard. Security at these gated communities is normally so tight outsiders can’t even drive in, so nobody expected the military police to just barrel straight through to raid the place. Passersby initially figured someone was just doing some renovations, but once they saw armed men in uniform sealing off all the entry and exit points, people pulled their motorbikes to the side of the road to watch the commotion.
When the raid hit, someone inside panicked so badly they didn't even use the front door, going barefoot straight up to the second-floor balcony looking for a way out. The balconies on these seaside villas are meant for catching the ocean breeze and watching the sunset, but this time it turned into an awkward spot with nowhere to hide. Local media reported that the military police came fully prepared, completely surrounding the villa so anyone inside had no way to fly out.
There have been a lot of new faces along the coast these past few years, and the people renting these luxury villas change hands all the time. The woman who runs the small grocery store on the street said you usually just see fancy cars coming and going from those places, with no way of knowing what’s really going on behind closed doors. By sundown, the military police were escorting several people into their vehicles and driving off. With the sea breeze blowing, the whole street went back to its usual surface-level calm, leaving only the shadows of the coconut trees swaying at the corner.
