The Yuanche and Ruifeng syndicates over at Three Pagodas Pass are gearing up to move their crews to a new compound in Wanhai. On September 9, all their Starlink gear was torn down. Even though the two bosses run separate operations inside the same compound—housing a total of 700 to 800 people—between 200 and 300 of them are locked away as captives. Together, these two outfits pull in around 7.5 million a month just from scam deposits. The moment new recruits touch down, their passports and phones are confiscated. They’re forced to give fingerprints, shoot compliance videos, sign pledge letters, and process "residence permits." Most of them are teenagers and kids barely out of childhood, while the oldest are only around 40—and a good number of them are folks from Yunnan back home.
Life inside the compound is pure hell. Inmates aren't allowed to sleep until 2:00 AM, and they have to drag themselves back up at 5:00 AM, forced to stand the whole time they work. When beatings happen, they blast music to drown out the screams. Waterboarding, hanging people up by their arms, and starvation are just routine. Youyou, a top manager for Yuanche, is notoriously brutal, with blood on his hands; he doesn't even spare his own men. Leadership has shifted to guys from Sichuan, and the perimeter guards have been swapped out for local police. Anyone too sick to walk or slow on the uptake is either worked to the bone as manual labor or resold to another outfit. Some get beaten so badly their hearts and pancreases pack in, left looking like living skeletons hanging on by a thread, while others have been beaten into a daze or outright dementia.
These two operations hunt for victims on platforms like Douyin and Kuaishou, posing as soldiers to target older folks back home who own property and have savings, running a classic matchmaking scam pretending they're looking for husbands for their daughters. While they're raking it in online, the people trapped in the compound are living a nightmare. As the local bosses put it, human "heads" are valuable—even if someone somehow manages to escape, they can just shell out 100,000 Thai baht to have them hunted down and dragged back. Either way, the bosses never lose. Now that the Starlink dishes are gone and the relocation is about to go down, things are only going to get even harder for the people stuck inside.
