On September 6, Vientiane police raided the Yuzhou Smart Hotel in Nongweikang Village, Xaythany District. A total of 43 people were detained at the scene, and those involved were then taken away for investigation.
Quite a lot of electronic devices were found in this raid. The hotel contained 468 mobile phones, along with dozens of laptop computers. In hotel rooms, that kind of quantity was clearly unusual at a glance.
Since early September, Vientiane has been continuously cracking down on cybercrime and online gambling dens. Multiple locations have been raided one after another, and more than 100 people have been detained in total, while large numbers of mobile phones and computers have also been seized.
Local inspections have been quite intensive lately. On the streets, everything still looks normal, with waves of motorcycle exhaust and roadside stalls still open as usual. But once the doors are shut and the curtains are drawn, what exactly some places are doing is now being examined more and more closely.
