The Ho Chi Minh City People's Court handed down sentences today in a massive transnational drug trafficking trial that packed the courtroom to capacity. A staggering 227 defendants were tied to the case, resulting in 11 death sentences and at least 20 life terms. The case dates back to March 2023, when four Vietnam Airlines flight attendants touched down in HCMC from Paris and were immediately flagged by customs. Upon inspecting their carry-on luggage, authorities found 157 tubes of toothpaste stuffed with over 10 kilograms of drugs. Local police later cleared the flight attendants, determining they were unwitting mules used to move the contraband for free. Following that single thread allowed investigators to unravel and bust the entire drug-smuggling ring operating out of France.
Local media reported that while the syndicate kept a low profile, they ultimately couldn't escape justice.
