The court in Longde County, under Guyuan City in Ningxia, recently wrapped up a case involving cross-border telecom fraud and illegal border crossings. The defendant, a man surnamed Ma, was sentenced to one year and two months in prison and hit with a 5,000 yuan fine. He pled guilty in court and accepted the judgment without appeal.
According to court findings, Ma had previously met a cellmate named Xue while serving a prior prison sentence. In May 2023, the pair decided to head south. Without applying for passports or any valid travel documents, they illegally snuck across the border into Myanmar. Once there, they waded into the murky world of telecom fraud and online gambling syndicates, drifting between scam outfits and illegal operations across Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos.
Living on the run through the Mekong region eventually came to an end. In February 2026, Ma snuck back across the border into China without papers, only to be picked up by police shortly after. The court ruled that Ma’s actions undermined border control and directly harmed the financial security of ordinary people. Taking into account his prior criminal record and the nature of his offenses, the court handed down the jail sentence and fine, bringing his gamble south to a quiet end.
